We are an evolution from an earlier band, the Furies (you can still see their info and hear tracks at www.furiesmusic.com). But now, it’s all new band members except for OF – that’s “original Furies” – Mark Edberg. The sound is different, and new tunes are brewing. Black Shag Sherpas is versatile, rhythmic, melodic, funky and pushy at the same time, with the male-female vocal mix that worked well with the Furies. It’s not light pop, yet it’s easy to hear. We get into it, and we care about what’s going on in the world outside.
And the name? Oh, who knows. Have you ever tried to agree on a band name? Well, we can tell you this: A black shag is a bird, from New Zealand (the Maori people call it a Kawau). Yes, it’s black. And sherpas? You may know them as famous Nepali mountaineering guides. So there it is. Hence the "bird with the hat" logo (now on Sherpas t-shirts, available soon on the website).

It's been a minute since Nathan Strejcek first emerged on the DC punk scene as lead singer of The Teen Idles and Youth Brigade, and a co-founder of Dischord Records. He is back with a ‘new’ band, The Delarcos, a new record, Irradiate, and a new label, Punkish Records with the help of Dischord.
The Delarcos are named after OG New York and DC scenester and producer Brooke Delarco, who has worked with the Feelies, Johnny Thunders & the Heartbreakers, Patti Smith, Emma Peel (featuring Dischord alumni John Stabb and Danny Ingram) and many others.
The Delarcos were founded in 2014 by Sean Epstein (drums, previously with Sisters of Morrissey), Mike Lastort (saxophone, 4th Wall), Kent Campbell (guitar), Jon Hamblin (vocals/guitar, Gleek) and Nathan (bass). The Delarcos contributed a cover of the unreleased Clash song Jericho to 2018 Record Store Day, Crooked Beat Records’ Recutting the Crap, Volume Two. Irradiate was recorded with Pete Banks on drums. Pete left and was replaced by Double Sharp Audio Studio's co-owner Wilfredo Morales (Swingamajig) in 2022.
The Delarcos new record Irradiate evokes the sounds and urgency of no-wave pioneers Pere Ubu, albeit with a more raw, humorous profile. Irradiate was produced and mixed by Brooke Delarco, engineered by Norman Van der Sluys and mastered by Tom Lyle (GI) at Inner Ear Studios. It is a split release between Dischord (No. 191.5) and Punkish Records (PR01).

Song Riot aren’t your average acoustic band. They mix genres like a good bartender mixes cocktails: with abandon. A cool Sinatra standard one minute, a Tom Waits classic the next, followed by a Latin-flavored original. Yet it all sounds of a piece, anchored by a passion for songs featuring strong melodies, a potential for musical exploration, and words that say something.
The story of Song Riot began during the pandemic, when accordionist Andrew Marcus’s son became enamored with Takoma Park-based children’s entertainer Mr. Gabe (aka singer and guitarist Gabe Hutter) via the latter’s weekly Zoom shows. When the two men finally met, Marcus offered his services, thinking he was about to become a children’s music star. But Hutter had something else in mind, and he and Marcus worked up a repertoire for adult audiences and began performing at DC area festivals, restaurants, and neighborhood events. Since then, Song Riot has grown from a duo to a quintet, featuring guitar, accordion, mandolin, bass and drums.
Selected performances: Columbia Festival of the Arts, El Golfo Restaurant (Silver Spring), Fairfax Summer Entertainment Series, Falls Church Festival, Takoma Park Street Festival, Zinnia (Silver Spring restaurant).
